Is it possible to grow and keep alive a cherry tree in southwest Florida? Or would the conditions not be right in that area for a cherry tree...

I believe Barbados Cherry (aka Acerola) would do well there, really well. However, its not a true Cherry. It's a bit tart and more for making juice out of than eating fresh.

I'm not an expert on your climate but I believe the true cherries, even the low chill ones would have a hard time in your climate. You are probably better off trying a Cherry Of the Rio Grande or a Capulin Cherry.

I wish I had your climate, there so many tropicals you can grow there.

You can try one of the low chill cherries from Dave Wilson, Minnie Royal or Royal Lee. A few people have them growing in the Tampa area (which obviously a little more north). It all depends on how much chill your area has. Obviously, you'll have to add tons of organic material to your sandy soil as well.
