I just saw a bunch of avocado trees for sale at HD on Mckellips and Power in Mesa the other day. Do they survive here? It seems too hot for them.

Advocados do grow here but they need lots of shade, and it depends on variety. I planted Haas last year in the Spring and even under shade cloth it shriveled up like lettuce in the sun when temperatures got over 115. I then planted a Zutano, in July, underneath shade cloth and it made it through the Summer and is so far doing well with afternoon shade. Although, I'd say its growth is a bit slow. I won't fertilize it though. I think that would cook it for sure.

I have had no success with Avacado trees. I am, however, pretty amateur in my endeavours. I attempted 2 summers in a row to transition in the shade of my porch, but they both shrivelled up with the heat.

If just casually looking I would reccomend papaya, mango, banana or guava.

I have had two avocados die (need to update my page on that). Both were from California. The first one, a Haas, couldn't handle the heat. The second one, Zutano, handled the heat but eventually died of salt burn.

However, I am trying one I bought from Florida called Winter Mexican, and it is doing really well. I've never had an Avocado tree grow like this one has. It has already doubled in size, has very large healthy leaves, and does not have any problems with salt burn. I think it might be because they use a more salt resistant rootstock in Florida.

I'll have to see what happens this summer though.

They are Bacon. They survived the hard freeze a few years ago without cover. Will see if the tree aborts today with the 110 expected record.

A big healthy tree like that. I'm guessing you'll get some fruit out of it this year. Especially, if you have a couple 100 little start up fruits like that on it.

That tree looks phenomenal!

What steps did you take to make that tree such a success?

Azmatt25,

They are on the Northeast side of house. I fertilize and water like a citrus. I covered them up when they were small thru the summer. It seems to be the summer not the winter that is the stressful time. And just be patient....Takes a long time for them to bear. Last year I about gave up on them. I figured it was because I didn't have a type A and B to cross pollinate. So I went out and bought some type B's. So they should produce even more. I will post some more photos as they get bigger. My babies are still growing.

Sorry the pic is so fuzzy. I got one pea size avocado~ Shocked
There is a Mexicola Grande/ and a Little cado in the same whole and they seem to be doing fine. Usually they flower and nothing But this year (when I planted them together) I got this little guy of HOPE. Very Happy

On my street there is a lady that has a huge 40ft tall Avocado tree, She said it used to give her avocados when It had other pollinators. Up the road there is a few 15ft. (Fuerte) ones. Mesa AZ These were all seed grown, some years ago.
