The summer weather in Phoenix is less than ideal for growing tomatoes on the ground because of the extreme temperatures. I've learned this first hand, as my tomato plants began to dry out and die despite my futile effort in keeping them alive. However, I haven't tried growing smaller dwarf varieties like cherry tomatoes in a pot that can be moved to a shaded area. If anyone has experience growing potted tomatoes, please let me know how they fare. I plan on growing them in a pot under a shaded patio that will allow them full morning and brief afternoon sun, but shaded from the harsh mid-day and evening sun. Please advise, any info would be much appreciated.

Edit: What would be the ideal pot to use for this purpose? Would black plastic pots cause the roots of plants to be cooked by the intensive Phoenix sun?

Even full shade is too hot for tomatoes here in the middle of summer. In fact, being potted would be even harder on the plants because the soil temperature in a pot will be higher than ground temperature. Now, if you pulled your pots inside the house in a sunny window for the hottest months, that might work real well.
