|

I purchased a small greenhouse (for germinating seeds) and I was wondering if I would be able to grow healthy papaya plants over winter with it. |

I don't see why not, Amadio....How tall is the greenhouse? They will only grow quickly when it's warm, so it should be slow growth - just watch the watering when it's cooler. As you may know, they LOVE to break your heart in the late winter or early spring as they collapse to the ground with a rotten trunk right at soil level, having looked so beautiful the year before.......

^ Aint that the truth! I have gotton so many thru winter only to have the bottom of the trunk rot and fall over early into spring. I personally dont water mine at all now in the winter. |

The greenhouse is 6ft tall, also do you think my root rot/cold problems would be solved if I had some light bulbs heating the pots so they don't get their feet wet? |

bulbs, heat lamps, anything to help them stay warmer is always good in the winter, but the watering will still have to be restricted.
I've read that a good rule of thumb is to only water them in winter if you see their leaves do that "wilting" thing, you know, like they'd do in summer on a hot day....and maybe use your fingers a lot, or a moisture meter to double check....

Thanks for the help... I think the the trickiest part will be germinating them with restricted water. |

Well Hyper, not sure you need to "restrict water" to germinate them...it's after they've sprouted!
I think the important thing to remember is just to let them dry out good between waterings.....it's the WET FEET syndrome that will kill them when the soil's colder
Don't me to scare you so much...

Yes gardening is certainly scary... I guess you could say I should 'grow a pear' before growing papaya |
