Has anyone tried growing muscadine grapes here in Phoenix? I don't think I've ever even had one. Do they taste like Concord grapes?

We have a very small muscadine vine that ive been working with. I have it in mostly shade as from a friend that grew up in the south has told be they are mainly found climbing trees in full shade. It survived the summer just fine and im waiting for it to come back out of dormancy. Mine isnt nearly as vigorous as a typical grape vine. But that may be because of the shade.

Interesting. Well, I just ordered two. I'll put them in eastern exposure. Here are the varieties.

Supreme, Late Fry

The Late Fry has perfect flowers so it will pollinate the Supreme which is female. The Supreme has huge grapes that almost look like small plums. Should be an adventure.

Just was noticing today that my muscadines have come out of dormancy. I think it might be another year or two before I can say that they will fruit here though.

what variety do you have? and do you have two of them? I read they need a pollinator.

How do they perform during the summer? any problems with pests?

That is a good question. They are Late Fry and Supreme.

Late Fry is supposedly self fertile. The Supreme is a female. I haven't gotten any berries off these vines and I've had them for years. They have really struggled with the heat though. I think they are finally starting to get established and more vigorous, finally. I have them on the east side of the house against a white wall. Even though its morning sun it is a bit much for them. I have a guava that is near them and starting to get big enough to provide some shade. I think that is why they are starting to do better.

The same catrepillars that go after the other grapes also go after the muscadines, although they aren't as bad as they are on my Flame Seedless. Maybe muscadines are the caterpillars second choice ha ha.

I just read the whole thread and realized you were asking Amadio, ha ha, oh well. Sounds like he is getting fruit. Cool. Seems like shade is needed.

I almost have the same setup as you, against a white wall and I have four guavas growing along the wall. Eventually they'll provide shade, but I'll probably have to put up some shade cloth next summer.

Where did you get your plants from? I can't seem to find them locally besides Richard's garden center. He had a variety called "southern home" which is a hybrid between bunch grapes and muscadine. I'm looking for Fry and Cowart. I found a source online but they don't ship them until they're dormant in the winter.
