Like the wild bear, the North American Psimitry comes out of his cave once a year to ask: what am I doing wrong?

Actually...this year I'm NOT asking that - because my trees are looking pretty decent. The Blood orange tree is VERY lush. The Macetera is likewise doing ok and actually has fruit on it this year!

The only question I have is regarding the blood orange tree: any suggestions on getting it to grow upwards as opposed to outward? Help/advice is appreciated!

Macetera:

Looking good. Outwards is good actually. Citrus are naturally more like big bushes than trees and you'll get a lot more fruit production when they are not trimmed up. Furthermore, you won't have to protect the trunk if the tree is allowed to shade itself.

It's amazing how great it is when your plants are growing really well. As opposed to last year when I was overwatering the hell out of most of my (non-citrus) plants, this year I think I've been watering about right.

The point is, you were not wrong when you said that once my trees have been in the ground a while, they'll take off. My blood orange tree last year shot off a single new branch. This year? I just happened to go out and look at it - there's 20 new branches with another what looks like 20 ones that could possibly shoot out soon.

Pretty damn cool.

Edit: also, the white paint I applied last year is splitting, implying the trunk is growing as well.
