I planted 6 gardenia plants in front of my house. They are in shade 60% of the day, and sun the balance. They looked great when I planted them, but have dried up and lost most of their leaves. I am guessing the soils are not acidic enough, and the drainage is bad. Allot of clay in this soil. So I have been adding acid via a product from Moon Valley nursery, called Moon Juice.
Any suggestions to bring them back? |

You have guessed correctly. They do not like our alkaline soil. I have had some friends that have kept gardenias alive in the soil here but just barely alive. If you want something aromatic and sweet smelling for your yard, then arabian jasmine, and carissa are much easier to grow here. They are both available at your local big box store. |

Could try some sequestrine 138 or K-rex iron scratched into the soil. Just make sure whatever iron supplement you get has EDDHA chelated iron, not the cheaper and ineffective EDTA that is in stuff like ironite. |
