Going on second year with various citrus trees that have planted in my yard (Eastern side of house) if this matters, wanted to know what the fertilization schedule is for Citrus trees. Also was talking to neighbor who stated that it is not healthy for young citrus trees to bear fruit, is this correct? and should I "prevent" the tree from bearing fruit if so how do you do this? Or is this simply a myth? Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.........

Fertilizer:

Good question. Citrus are normally recommended to be fertilized three times a year for maximum growth in early March, late May, and middle September. However, in the Phoenix area they do better if fertilized less often. A conservative approach is to only fertilize them once a year in early May with a slow release fertilizer. The reason is that fertilizing in March can burn young foliage and flowers, and fertilizing in the fall sets a tree up for salty soil problems over the winter. Slower growing citrus need less fertilizer than more vigorous varieties. Newly planted trees should not be fertilized the first year because they are too easily burned. The recommendations on citrus fertilizers bags are generally too high. To be safe one should half the rates recommended.

Young trees and fruit:

Don't let young trees bear fruit = myth. The only time I would worry is if your tree was so small that the trunk can be broken by the weight of the fruit. Stores don't usually even sell them that small. The more fruit you can get out of your tree the better.
