I've been told a number of times that Phoenix Arizona is too hot for growing nectarines. Well, I tried a Snow Queen white nectarine once in full sun and sure enough it died in the heat of summer. Later on I spotted a Nectar Babe nectarine at a local store and decided to give it a try. I put it in a very sheltered spot, sandwiched between my rather large lemon tree and a west facing wall. In this location it probably only gets about 2-3 hours of direct sun a day from 11 AM to 1 PM or something like that. The west facing wall is not really a source of reflected heat because the lemon tree shades it in the afternoon. Two years later I got nectarines. They are on the small side but quite delicious. Yes, I did pick the one on the left too green. It only produced 4 nectarines this year, but the Nectar Babe is a slow grower and still only about thigh high. So, it appears nectarines do grow in Phoenix.

I hope that these do ok here as I just bought three and have them ready to plant in my new mini orchard.
They say to paint the whole thing (except the leaves :)with 50/50 white latex interior paint and water. So, I will try that as well as mulching and some shade cloth. Then, I'll cross my fingers.

Mine is still going strong. It does get a fair amount of shade were it is planted.
