Pictured below is a Baobab I have had in the ground in my front yard for two years. It has survived two winters without incident. The variety of this boabab is Adansonia grandidieri http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adansonia_grandidieri

As you can see on wikipedia it has the potential to become humongous. That is why I have it planted far from the house. I purchased it mail order from Tucson, and grew it in a pot for about 3 years before putting it into the ground. Hopefully if this baobab gets large enough before any unusually cold winters it will be big enough to survive any kind of cold that the desert here can throw at it.

I water it weekly in summer and don't water it the rest of the year. Baobabs go dormant in winter and lose all of their leaves. This tree takes a long time to come out of dormancy and really doesn't leaf out until early summer. It takes the Phoenix Arizona heat well, is drought tolerant, and is currently about 3.5 feet tall.

It's been 7 years since your post.. Can we get a status on how it's growing? Maybe an updated picture?

Thanks. Smile

Unfortunately it was killed by a freeze about 5 years ago. Sad

That's a bummer. I'm trying one now. We'll see how it does?
