For years, I have been putting my pet cockatiel outside on the porch on a chair anytime I am in the yard. His wings are clipped so I'm not too worried about him flying away. However, lately there seems to be a "friendly" hawk taking an interest in my bird. For the second time in the last month, this hawk has come to visit us when I had my bird outside. My bird freaks out, as you can imagine, when it shows up.

It seems I'll need to keep my bird inside for a while or be within arms reach of him whenever I take him out. Does anyone know what type of hawk this is? He is big. I'd say about a 3 foot wingspan. It is darn sneaky too, gliding slowly at about the level of the house tops. I think maybe the only reason it hasn't carried my bird off yet, is because it can't quite figure out what he is. I haven't seen a lot pigeons in the neighborhood lately either.. ha ha.

I looked in our bird book and it's a young Harris's Hawk. Fully mature, they have a 4 foot wingspan. Hay Carumba! Maybe we should keep the kids in the neighborhood inside too.
