Seems like a palo verde with its open canopy is perfect for pitahayas.

Agreed, but if anyone is serious about getting fruit, a trellis is the way to go. Because I don't want to go 10 ft up a tree.

Al Falkenstein from the fruit club grows lots of them and he has posts with wires between them and then a T up top to provide support for a shade cloth or frost protection. Here is a photo of his setup.

He got hit fairly hard by the freeze the winter before last, but overall he's had a lot of success. I found his red varieties really nice tasting, and I'm normally not a big fan of pitahaya's.

Cool set up. I have my trellis under a tree for filtered light. Also most dragon fruit (although great looking) are tasteless, the red, purple, and yellow colored dragon fruits tend to be the sweetest.

I figured I would post updates of the plant here. This plant is a little over 3 years old, and this is the first time it has 'almost' flowered.

First flower bloomed, not exactly what I planned but it works because my variety is self fruitful.

I have a dragon fruit climbing my lemon tree. I just kind of threw it under there for lack of better place to put it when a friend gave it to me. It grows fairly slowly. Probably not enough sun, but still alive. Were you expecting a red flower?

Yeah, sun is most likely it's problem, 25% is probably ideal. Also no I didn't expect a red flower, although that would be quite interesting to see as well. I believe there is a named variety called 'Connie Mayer' that has purple flowers.

Both fruits set successfully without pollination.

Yes - very cool Mr. Hyperfalls...by the way, exactly (or more or less!) how does a dragon fruit taste? Is it sweet, odd, or an acquired taste????

For me, the best tasting ones taste like water melon. The worst tasting ones taste like elmers glue.
