After the January '07 freeze, my 15-foot ficus looked dead, so I had my landscaper cut it back thinking that it would fully come back. Not true. There is full growth around the base, about two-feet above ground on its trunk, but no growth on the large branches. Did I do the wrong thing?, and what should I do now to encourage growth on the large branches? Thanks. Sad

Your tree grew back from the point at which it was alive. You should cut off the old dead trunk about three inches above where the new growth is coming out.

Those new branches coming out are your new tree. You now have a tree which branches from a lower point. It will most likely be impossible to have a perfectly straight trunk above your new growth point but you can remove all but your most verticle branch to have a single trunked tree again. Staking that single branch to make it grow straighter might also help.

Multi trunked trees can be very appealing too, so you could just stop with triming off the old dead stuff.

Good luck. Very Happy
