Lately, I have seen some bananas marked as "Rajapuri" at Home Depot and even in our AZRFG demo garden. However, they don't look like the real thing to me. Here is a photo of mine. Notice how heavy the trunk is and how the leaves are very oval, kind of paddle shaped. Also, no spotting on the leaves like a Dwarf Cavendish. It looks very different from many of the other banana varieties you see.

For example. This one Bkaus has, does not look at all like a Rajapuri to me. Maybe I could give Bkaus a pup.

Here is another example of a real Rajapuri online.

Here is mine when is was young. Even then, fat leaves, fat trunk.

I was thinking the same thing that the Banana plant that I purchase labeled Rajapuri was really something else because it didn't look anything like yours.

It would be great if I could get a pup from you. I really like the look of the Raja Very Happy

The ones that HD/Lows and others sell here marked as Rajapuri in the valley are all skinny and not compact and stout looking like yours.

I have a shoot off of mine that I can check for roots. I have tried to pull pups from my tree (corm) before but wasn't able to get any roots with it and it subsequently died. I'll let you know. If I can separate it I'd like to get it going in a pot and then you can swing by and pick it up. I'll just give it to you free if it works out. I don't mind sharing because it seems to be the only banana variety that I've seen do truly well here. It takes cold like a trooper and fruits almost every year. Keep in mind it does get afternoon shade where I have it and is close to the house.

The tale of woe below has two purposes:

1) A cautionary tale to avoid purchasing / wasting money on unconfirmed Raja Puri. You waste space and water and instead of getting fruit you get a really pathetic looking plant by the end of the summer

2) A plea to anyone growing a 'real' Raja Puri to share any pups if you have one to spare!

------------------------------------

I think I am another victim of the 'fake' Raja Puri. This banana originally came from LaVerne (if I recall correctly). It was very small when I bought it last fall.

It's growth habit has been very lanky, not at all 'stout'. The leaves are very long relative to their width, not at all paddle shaped. The color is 100% green on the leaves and trunk, with only the faintest pink on the petiole edges. There is no mottling on the leaves at all.

The banana grew fine last fall, I protected it over the winter, and grew like a champ in the spring and put out 3 new pups! So I was thinking that even if it wasn't a Raja Puri it might still do well.

.... wrong.

As soon as the summer hit all the new growth is burning up. On top of that, it can't even stand a medium breeze without getting shredded. So when the monsoons came they got annihilated. The plant is still technically alive but all the growth is in very bad shape. I think there is almost no chance that it will make flowers, and even if it does there is much less of a chance it could bear them to maturity through the next summer.

See the pictures below.
