I know this is not exactly a 'tropical' topic but I have been enjoying a nice fig harvest this year. I have 3 fig trees: Violette de Bordeaux / Negronne, Panache, and Black Jack.
All the trees are maybe 3-4 years old and 4-6 ft tall, not large at all.
My Black Jack started ripening 3-4 weeks ago and I have received maybe 2 dozen figs off it. The later figs are noticeably better than the earlier figs. The flavor as a fresh fig is okay. It is 'figgy' (classic fig flavor) but not very intense. I think these might work well for drying, but I didn't get enough figs this year to bother with that (maybe next year). My favorite application with these figs was to spread a little goat cheese on top and drizzle with honey. Excellent that way.
My VdB is by far my best producer this year. It is my oldest fig tree, even though it is still the smallest (it is a small tree by nature) but it has tons of branching and loves the heat. It is still producing lots of figs. These are my favorites for fresh eating. Soft and slightly juicy. Rich and intense flavor with notes of raspberry.
My Panache was a dud, but completely my fault. I put tanglefoot on the other two figs (wrap a really thin plastic paper like surveyors tape around the base of the trunk and then put a thick slathering of tanglefoot around the circumference) to keep the ants at bay. But I didn't on the Panache (brain cramp I guess). Ants got to nearly every fig. But I just tried one a few minutes ago that was unspoiled and perfectly ripe. When they are unripe they are a gorgeous dark and light green variegation. And when they are ripe they are a pale gold. But the flesh is a deep intense red, almost crimson. So it is a beautiful fruit the entire season. The flavor is rich and intense, much like the VdB, but perhaps more strawberry overtones.
Already looking forward to next year's crop!

We have lots of Black Mission figs here too. You made me hungry. I'm going to go eat a fig now.
