We seem to have a lot of roof rats in our neighborhood in Mesa Arizona lately. They of course love the orchards and all the landscapting people have in their yards. They recently decided to move into our attic. Part of our attic where the air handler is, is below the insulation so it's not hot in there and makes a perfect isolated place for them to live. We knew they were their because we started to hear them skittering around up their from inside the house. I have been using rat traps and I have caught a lot but it is a lot of work to check the traps, get rid of them etc. How are other people dealing with these darn things?

I have had them in my attic too and the best way to get rid of them I have found is the Tomcat rat poison. The rats are crazy for it, but you have to be careful of your pets. It comes in a bait box but the rats we had in our attic were to big for the darned bait box. Seeing as how none of my pets go in the attic I just laid the poison out on the ceiling up there and they scarfed it up and the scampering stopped. However, I have had them move back in several times. It seems the rats are throughout the neighborhood and when there is vacancy they move back in. So, I recommend just keeping a nice pile of poison up there indefinitely. I wonder if there is radius like rat graveyard around my house?
