Does anyone grow these? They are supposed to do ok here. I am also curious about the taste. Some reviews that I have read have said that they are gritty which doesn't sound very appealing.

I am growing Florida Home and Hood. The Florida Home has fruited and they were good pears. I vaguely recall someone telling me that they grew Keiffers and they were big but not good.

We have a large mature Kieffer pear in our orchard. Fabulously productive tree but they are kinda meant to be a canning pear. If ripened inside they can be quite good fresh eatting but the texture is not as fine as say a bartlett. My wife makes some mighty fine pies out of the pears. We just put in a Hood and a 20th century asian pear but both are small yet.

Overall I think Kieffers get a bad wrap. I wouldnt want to be without ours.

Thanks to both of you! I really want a fresh eating type of pear. I do have a 4 in 1 Asian pear tree so I am looking for more of the standard type pear.
I love the sound of the Keiffer in that it is self fruitful and seems to be very productive but since I only have so much room for trees, I found a 3 in 1 mild climate pear tree that I may try. It has Florda Home, Hood, Comice or Monterrey so I may try one of those since you need two for pollination. I'm not wild about multibudded trees but I haven't tried the two or three trees in one hole route yet. I always wonder what would happen if one died.
Do you guys have any experience with these multi-budded trees? My Asian Pear tree is only almost 1 year old so I don't have much to report on it yet. I did get a couple of 20th Century pears though but the birds got those.
