My first Manila Mango on this tree seems to be coming along well. I planted this tree about 1.5 years ago in March.

Wow that's awesome,is that a seedling or a grafted mango?

It's a seedling, but Manila mangoes are polyembryonic, meaning they generally come true from seed.

Poly means many. So in a polyembrionic seed there are multiple clones of the Manila mango tree.

It means, Mariolo, that you can plant the seed of a fruit that you get from this tree, and the seedling and subsequent tree will be exactly like the parent tree.....a monoembrionic Mango means if you plant the seed of that type of tree, the seedling will be like either like the mother or father tree that created the Monoembrionic Mango....

Okay here is what I understand in more depth. Polyembryonic seeds produce a number of seedling plants from a single seed, and some of these seedlings are clones of the parent, rather than being a child combination of the two parent plants. However, the clone is generally more vigorous so at places like La Verne they see which is most vigorous and trim off the others, so you end up with a clone of the parent. Now, I'm not 100% sure about this selection process, because I was told this verbally by a friend.

Monoembryonic seeds produce just one plant, and that plant is a genetic combination of its parents and unique in the world just like a person or animal is etc. With monoembryonic seedlings you could potentially get a unique fantastic mango but it could also be horrible tasting. It's a gamble because it is not a clone of the parent tree. Fruit trees are generally grafted for this reason, so that you get a known cultivar.

Indian mangoes are generally monoembryonic whereas Southeast Asian mangoes are generally polyembryonic.

Mariolo - what is the black stuff surrounding the base of the tree? Did you plant this in a bag of garden soil or something?
Probably a little rich for the plant....seems like that would burn this plant....

and yes mulch and mulch some more.....but I'm more worried about the black stuff
