We went to Costa Rica for our summer vacation this July and tasted some really unusual fruit. Pictured below is a velvet persimmon. It had almost no seeds in it and tasted like Cherimoya. I have seen some lackluster reviews of this fruit on the internet but they were really off target when it comes to the flavor, because this thing was delicious. It is a relative of persimmon but the texture is nothing like a persimmon. It is smooth and firm like an apple, but even less grainy, and not wet at all like a persimmon. Also, sources on the internet that say it smells bad... completely wrong as well. Possibly the flowers smell bad when flowering, but I didn't witness a flowering tree, just one loaded with fruit.
We didn't eat the skin, just sliced it and ate like you would an orange. Fruit is the size of a medium sized apple.
