|
|
Wanting to grow Papaya plants and so far not having much luck getting the mail ordered seeds to germinate. Have bought 100 of the Tainung # 1 online and tried germinating in a seed tray using potting soil with no luck after a month.
Put about 100 seeds that were sprouting inside the papaya from a store in one 10 inch pot to see if they came up and they seemed to all come up. Put some of the same seeds in small 16 oz cups and none came up.
I’m thinking that the soil was to wet?
Trying the Tainung #1 again with seed starter soil with 1/3 sand added to the soil also soaked the seeds 24 hours before planting in a 4 inch cup.
any advice?

Came across this article from "University of Hawaii" to use KNO3 to help improve germination.
http://www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/oc/freepubs/pdf/F_N-8.pdf
Steps to improve papaya seed germination:
1. Mix 100 grams of potassium nitrate in 1 liter of water
(3.4 ounces in 1 quart).
2. Soak seeds for 30 minutes.
3. Plant immediately after soaking.
And

Seed Treatment Methods
Hydrogen Peroxide
This is commonly available in a 3% solution. It may be used in full strength for about 20 minute to disinfect seed and alter the seed coat. The peroxide may then be diluted in half with water and the seed soaked for up to 24 hours.

Sounds like the seeds you mail ordered were probably too old. Papayas are usually easy to get started, it's keeping them alive that is the hard part.

I have found the best bet is getting the ones from HD & Lowes. If they die I take them back. They are a hard keep for me and I have found my best luck with leaving them in their pot and sinking it into the ground. If they start to struggle you can pull them up and move them without shocking them.

I like the idea of being able to move them if they get stressed
Couldn't find anyone with papaya plants at this time of year. I'm looking for some plants to overwinter and put out in the spring with hopes of fruit by November 2013.

It's been 7 days and the seeds are starting to sprout. Not sure what happened with the first batch I'll see how many come up.

Looking good! The HD at Val Vista and Broadway had a few nice ones last week. 3G ones with 3 plants in them for $13. I picked up a few to roll the dice again.

Thanks,
I never been to the HD on Val Vista and Broadway they sound like they have lots of tropical plants. I haven't seen anything in the HD at Thunderbird and I-17 close to where I live.

My papaya in the ground is doing very well this year. It endured the summer and seems to be really starting to take off. So far the best formula for a papaya in the ground seems to be
1) Lots of light shade and early morning sun.
2) Lots of mulch
3) No fertilizer (mulch supplies the nutrients, they seem to burn so easily with any kind of fertilizer, even fish emulsion)
4) Very little direct water (the mulch plus the shadiness seem to make watering much less necessary). Mine is uphill about 3 feet from my banana so it probably gets some moisture through the ground but doesn't get watered directly unless its brutally hot and its drooping in the morning. They always droop some on really hot days.
5) Planted on mound above surrounding ground location. Keeps the crown out of wet soil.

Thanks for the info. So many contradictory things about how to grow them on the internet. I will move them to bigger pot and overwinter in a green house or on the patio and then plant in the spring. Right now they are getting water from my pond which has some fish poo in it.

The papayas haven't done much over the last two months the trunk has gotten bigger but not much height growth. Re-potted two of them in a much looser potting mix hopefully this will keep them from getting root rot over the winter.

They always seem to stall at that size. Maybe they are growing their roots, not sure.
