It's supposed to be semi-dormant. I also scratched the bark to see if it was green underneath and it was, so I hope it starts to put out growth soon.

I have joined the guamuchil club. I bought this tree at HD in Mesa. It's from La Verne nursery in CA and labeled as "Carribean Dreams". It's really thorny and is just starting to leaf out. Don't confuse it with the green leaves and purple flowers that are on the orchid tree behind it.

Yeah, I did the same thing. Hopefully it just goes dormant with frosts and not freeze to the ground.

Yes, it says its only hardy to 32°F on the tag, but those things are often wrong. Let's hope so.

My former guamuchil stick is growing vigorously. It loves the heat.

I took this photo back in the middle of June. My tree only had one fruit on it this year. It a small tree since it was frozen back the winter before last. As you can see they do fruit here and do not require any cross pollination. This fruit tasted really good. It kind of tasted like an almond to me, but a little sweeter. I have also noticed that the tree is requiring less water now that it's getting established.

Btw, to get it through the hard freeze in January 2013, I buried its base in about a foot of mulch. Everything above the level of the mulch froze back, but the part that was protected came back very vigorously in spring. This last winter was mild. Maybe this plant can freeze all the way to the ground and still come back, but I'm not sure.
