This Christmas weekend I got a 5-1 apple tree, a 4-1 plum/prune tree and a nectarine tree. I am making some planters for them. The description for the trees says they will only be 3' tall, they are already taller than that be even then they will be a great addition to my back yard. _________________ *******

Sounds great. I doubt you'll get much out of the apple though, because of the chill hours required. Only a few select varieties of apples produce here. I've never heard of a prune tree. Is that what happens to a plum tree when temperatures go over 105 F. ha ha |

I have not research the plums a lot, what I need to do is to get the names of the varieties and just investigate but for what I have read the prunes are the plums once they are dried up.
As far as the apples, one tree and one branch of the 3-1 is the Anna variety, this one was originated in Israel, ans has only about 200 chill hours requiriment, so I am hopping to get some apples by 2011. _________________ *******

I am doing some planting in the next week also. I am going to plant a bareroot almond variety Garden Prince Dwarf, and two low chill pears named Hood, and Florida Home. Should be fun. |

My dad has one of those 3 in one trees and it grows like crazy but hasn’t give him fruit yet(4years in the grown). Anna’s/ golden Dorset’s, are the most reliable in AZ(without question). And (it sounds weird) But I’ve herd of gardeners Adding blocks of ice form Circle K, to get Fuji apples to fruit here, This might give you an extra 50 hours of chill if you need it, and have had success doing it.
Plums - Santa Rosa/weeping Santa Rosa are the best(300chill), the sutama/kino ect are Asian types and need to be cross pollinated with another Asian variety.
ASian pear are said to produce here with little chill hours, but personaly Ive found them to be bland. I want to get a Floridahome pear, or floridaprince pear.
They have this new variety of peaches in HD stores callled Florida king, suppost to be bigger and better then the "Prince". we'll see.
Good luck to you. _________________ Edible House |
