I was reading about different ways to plant plumerias, and I'm wondering, can you keep a plumeria in a pot forever, or do you eventually plant it in the ground?

I've had one in a pot for 9 years. I periodically trim it. It does seem to be getting heavier and heavier though. It hasn't busted the pot or died yet so I'm guessing if not forever, you can keep them in a pot for a long time.
