Wow. Every now and then I realize there is something that I really wish I had known years ago. I just learned that there a number of different types of iron substances for your plants and the majority of them really don't work in our soil. Check out this chart.
http://www.akzonobel.com/micronutrients/products/product_stability/
Notice that fe-HEDTA is not really affective for supplying iron to iron deficient plants in soils with a ph over 7. Unfortunately for us here in the Phoenix area we would consider ourselves very lucky to have a ph even below an 8.
So here is the list of products that I've used that have fe-HEDTA as their source of chelated iron. They are listed from least to most affective in my experience.
ironite
greenlight soil acidifier
liquinox iron and zinc (use for foliar)
Just the other day I was searching information on lychees and chlorosis and I found a scientific paper recommending EDDHA iron for lychees in alkaline soil. The darn stuff is good to a ph of 10!
Here it is being sold on Amazon.

Pricey stuff but this just might make a huge difference for some of my plants. Also, I only use 1 tsp per. gallon of water so even the 1 pound can of it will last a long long time.
I poured it around some choice plants today and it looks very different than the other iron chelates. Mixed with water it looks like blood.
I'll post here to report the results. |
