Here is a close up of a pineapple guava flower in May 2010. The variety is Nazemetz. It has been in the ground for over 2 years and is planted right next to another pineapple guava variety named Coolidge, on the east side of a 6 foot wall. Pineapple guavas are still an experiment for me and I'm not sure how they'll turn out here in the desert. Neither one of these plants have fruited but this is the first spring they flowered substantially. I don't give them any fertilizer at all, having killed a pineapple guava in the past. So far they seem to be doing well. The white petals on pineapple guavas are edible. They have a hint of sweetness to them but still taste like foliage. I have eaten pineapple guava fruit in California, off a tree in the Fullerton Arboratium. I find the flavor of pineapple guavas a little unusual, but good.

What fruit would you compare them to in terms of flavor and texture? Do they have large seeds in them, or are they mostly edible fruit?

Maybe kind of like a kiwi but much less sour.
