...now this is another Manila I also bought at Home Depot, maybe 5 years ago and transplanted to this location about 2 years ago and am using it for grafting other varieties. This year I let some fruit stay on the tree and notice - they have a slightly pink blush, and the ones in the background if you go in close, are actually reddish! So much for seedling Manilas being the same fruit - but don't get me wrong - I'm hoping they will be good!

(oh, and don't be confused - that is two trunks - the one of the left is the manila, the other tree I cut way back and am using it for support - don't ask! Confused )

Looks great! Palm springs is just that little bit less likely to freeze than here in Phoenix I believe. Do you have to protect your trees some winters?

I do, PT, on some nights - not all the plants but in the "cold spots" on the property. Last year just two nights of frost came in the first couple weeks in Dec. and that was it, though there were other nights i covered just to be safe.

so, how many total mangos youthink you'll get this year?

Just one. Sad They all dropped in May when it got unusually hot. I am planning to water extra in May next year, especially if it gets real hot.

.....hmmmmm....so you think that was it? Didn't have enough water to hold the fruits - yep, guess that would do it...how many fruits did you have the year before......

Last year nothing because we had a nasty freeze. The year before that it was something like:

Manila - 5
Keller - 3
Keitt - 3

My Keitt's taste was incredible last year - how was yours
(from the year before)?

And my Manila - just good - how 'bout you?

All three varieties were great. The heat here makes them seem almost excessively sweet. If I had to compare, probably the Keller was the best of all three.

well, i'll post on the taste of the Alphonso, Rosigold and mahachinok when they come to the table - oh and a couple Pickering - and that's ASSUMING, no accidents or thievery are in their destiny.

Did your Manila have fiber? Mine had enough around the seed, but much less the farther it went out towards the skin...

I agree with you - heat is a key to nice sweetness...

I recall the Manila being pretty much fiberless.
