I figured since I've got some stuff coloring and ripening
up, other desert growers must as well!

I am green with envy!
How many different types do you have?

In your opinion, which ones taste the best?

Well Dauntless - the numbering on the mangoes is for a Mango Tasting Event I'm having at my house this Friday, the 18th,and I wanted it to be a BLIND taste test. It's mostly growers and fellow mangophiles from the L.A., Orange and San Diego county areas who will be coming out. This will be the second year I've done this....

But to answer your question, I picked these to ripen and so haven't tasted any as yet.

They represent these mangoes (of which some you can probably pick out a few):

Gold Nugget
Valencia Pride
Keitt
Maha Chinok
2 kinds of Manila
Lemon Zest
Pina Colada
Alphonso

I picked these last Thursday - some of them are softening, some are still ROCK HARD like the Keitt, Kent, Gold Nugget and Pina Colada, so they may not be ready. What we are also doing is having some shipped from Florida that will arrive on Wed. or Thursday so we can add a comparison test to those that are duplicated....

Hey, I've still got room for 1 or 2, so if any Phoenician growers want to come out at NOON on Friday, the 18th, you can join in the fun.....for me,
it's all about sharing....

Awesome table of mangos. You have something figured out being able to grow them in the desert Very Happy The large Alphonso tree that I purchased in the spring of 2013 has 5 mangoes on it they are still very green no color change yet. It sent out it's blooms a good month after the Carrie which set no fruit but the nights were still dipping into the low 40 at that time. Also there is lots of new growth on all the mango trees in my small grove.

Last week I was in San Diego and always on the hunt for mangos. Brought some Alphonso from a farmers market and some Keitt from Food for Less and a un-named type from Zion Market. They were all good but the best were the Keitt they had no fiber and a very smooth sweet taste.

What was the results of your taste testing? I have read that a mango peak flavor only last for a day or two is that you have experienced?

Looks great. I just ate my one Keller mango this morning. It was tiny but super good. My fruit didn't hold this year for some reason. I'm thinking it is because I didn't fertilize at all in the spring. Next year I am going to fertilize regularly in the spring and see how that works.

Never had a Keller, PT - assume it's a Florida mango.
I've really been disappointed with a highly hyped mango -
Maha Chanok - that I have in my yard. It's the second
year in a row - the flavor is washed out sweet - like very
diluted. There is someone on the other forum
I frequent that is from Phoenix who had a GREAT
experience with his....It smells heavenly sitting in the
kitchen as it ripened ..... in my picture, it's the really pretty
mango in the lower left - #4.

He said he has clayey calciferous soil - maybe that's the
difference....is that what you have?

Any other mangoes moving towards ripe, PT?

#4 looks like the one on the mango tree at the county extension office in Phoenix where we have most of the AZRFG meeting.

Yeah, BK....unbelievably disappointing for such a PURTY thing....
If any of you guys are driving west to LA or Palm Springs, you're welcome
to stop by and try one!

Laughing

(Actually - anyone can stop by my place any time and if I have some fruit
to open, we can sit and cut it up and eat it!)
