It was gravel for the past 20+ years I assume but I got rid of it and have been mixing in compost for the last 3 years.

It got froze back to the top of the chicken wire but is recovering nicely.

Plant got toasted with no shade this June and July but it's coming back. Also planted some more Bananas in my little grove.
