Does anyone else have problems getting the fruit that you grow because the pests get it before you do?
Last year even though I had a good bit of fruit on the trees, I did not get one piece!
I tried the bird netting that you get at the local stores but what a pain. It is a tangled mess to use.
So, what do you guys do for pests? If anything. |

Is it mostly birds that are getting your stuff? |

Yes. There were some squirrels but we live trapped them and relocated them far away. |

Dauntless - I used that skanky bird netting too last year and much to my dismay, besides being a TOTAL pain in the A _ _ to use, I ended up trapping
and killing a dozen and a half beautiful nice-sized lizards that could not escape from its web.... ugh - that was painful to see....
I've never had a bird/mango or papaya problem but for the apples and peaches, I'm going to get something like a bird netting that's very tightly gapped so it won't catch on every damn little thing it touches.....

I also caught some things that I didn't want to like an 8 foot long Red Racer. He was already dead by the time I saw him.
Mainly, I wanted to get something just for this season. I just bought a load of galvanized steel pipe and by next year, the plan is to have 3/4s of my orchard enclosed. That is the section with peaches, apples, plums etc. Hopefully, the citrus, fig and pomegranate area can make it without protection.
I was wondering if anyone has used a Remay (floating row cover) type fabric. It's light and airy but wouldn't catch everything. Keeping it on in the wind may be another story. |
